On Wednesday, Baseball America ranked its best players per the state that the selected baseball player is playing in within the Division One umbrella.
West Virginia — the state — made the cut, with WVU’s Dawson Montesa being rated as the best player in the state of West Virginia per the major publication.
Here is what Baseball America said about Montesa:
Dawson Montesa overwhelmed Division IIhitters, posting a 1.99 ERA with 105 strikeouts against 24 walks over 72.1 innings and established himself as one of the most reliable arms at that level. He does not rely on overpowering velocity, instead succeeding with command, sequencing and a deep mix that allowed him to work efficiently and miss bats. His ability to throw strikes and navigate lineups multiple times separated him from his peers, and now the focus turns to how that production translates as he steps up in competition.
Montesa, who transferred in from Adelphi, will make his WVU debut on Sunday in the series finale against Georgia Southern and is expected to be a key contributor to the Mountaineers pitching rotation this season.
Montesa was rated as my top pitching transfer this offseason and has the ability to possibly, if he has a good season with WVU, get selected in this years MLB Draft.
