WVU Gets Big Recruiting Win; Looks to Finish Season Strong Against Texas Tech

By: Justin Walker | WV Sports Chat

Week 13 was a bye week for WVU football after a disappointing 25-23 loss to Arizona State in week 12.

Despite not playing a game, Coach Rodriguez and his staff won a huge victory, this time on the recruiting trail.

Four-star offensive lineman Kevin Brown verbally committed to the Mountaineers. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania star made his announcement live on the Pat McAfee show. In true Mountaineer form, Brown then proceeded to burn a couch in celebration of the commitment.

The 6-foot-5 inch 275-pound tackle is a legacy recruit for West Virginia. His dad, Tim Brown, played under Rich Rodriguez during his first stint in Morgantown.

Brown had previously committed to Penn State, but reopened his recruitment after James Franklin was fired in early October.

In addition to Penn State, he chose the Mountaineers over Ohio State and North Carolina.

Texas Tech Up Next

While West Virginia is officially out of bowl contention following the Arizona State loss, they still have a chance to pull off one of the biggest upsets at Mountaineer Field in recent memory.

The 4-7 Mountaineers welcome the 10-1 and 5th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders to town on Saturday. The game will kickoff at 12:00pm EST/11:00am CST and the game will air on ESPN.

Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech squad can clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship game with a win. For WVU, it’s all about pride, playing the role of spoiler and sending their 40 seniors off with a win on Senior Day.

This will be the 15th overall meeting between the two programs and the 14th time they have met since West Virginia joined the Big 12 in 2012. The series is currently tied at 7-7. Texas Tech leads the series 7-6 in Big 12 games. The last meeting was a 52-14 Red Raider win in Lubbock to end the 2024 season and ultimately, the Neal Brown era at WVU.
