WVU Baseball Ace Lands with Royals

Former WVU baseball pitcher Maxx Yehl has been drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals took Yehl with the number 91 pick of the third round.

The left-hander helped lead WVU baseball to their first appearance in the College World Series this past season. As a key piece of the Mountaineers’ pitching staff, he put together a dominant season on the mound. He finished the year with an overall record of 9-3 with a 2.13 ERA, racking up 112 strikeouts and allowing only 26 walks over 97 innings pitched.

He will be known forever in Morgantown for his incredible resilience. After missing the entire 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, the big 6-foot-6 southpaw returned to absolute peak form for Steve Sabins’ club. His heavy mid-90s fastball and devastating sweeper baffled hitters all year, earning him Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors and cementing his place as a Consensus All-American.

Yehl’s selection continues a huge stretch for the West Virginia baseball program as they continue to see their top talent head to the professional ranks.

Earlier in the day, fellow pitcher Dawson Montesa was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.
