In a heartfelt moment that brought cheers and tears at the ballpark, West Virginia National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe stepped onto the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the West Virginia Mountaineers faced Penn State in a baseball game on Wednesday.
On November 26, 2025—the day before Thanksgiving—Wolfe, then 24 and from Martinsburg, West Virginia, and fellow West Virginia National Guard member U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of Summersville, were conducting high-visibility patrols as part of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission near the Farragut West Metro station, just blocks from the White House.
Wednesday’s first pitch at the WVU-Penn State game represented another milestone in Wolfe’s journey back to normalcy.
As a member of the 167th Airlift Wing’s Force Support Squadron, his presence at a Mountaineers game—West Virginia’s flagship university—felt especially fitting for a proud son of the Mountain State.
