The Return of a Mountaineer Veteran: Preston Fox Rejoins WVU Football

by: Justin Walker

The West Virginia Mountaineer football program received a major boost this week. Veteran wide receiver Preston Fox has decided to return to the team. Fox had initially announced his retirement from football, despite having one year of college eligibility remaining. However, according to Head Coach Rich Rodriguez, who spoke about the matter in a recent press conference, Fox reached out to him asking if he could return to the team. “I’d love to have him,” said Rodriguez. “He’s a good football player, and I think all of his teammates loved him. It’s good to have him.” Rodriguez also highlighted Fox’s intelligence, which will enable him to to play multiple positions at wide receiver. That versatility will be an invaluable asset to the offense. This homecoming marks an exciting development for WVU football, as they welcome back a proven playmaker and leader.

Fox, a native of Morgantown, has been a fixture in the Mountaineer program for the past four seasons. After a standout high school career, he joined the WVU team as a walk-on and quickly earned a scholarship through his hard work and dedication. Over the course of his collegiate career, Fox has established himself as a reliable and versatile receiver. He is capable of making clutch plays and providing a steadying presence in the locker room.

The Mountaineers’ receiving corps has undergone significant changes this offseason, with the team losing a lot of production from last year’s roster. The return of Fox helps to address this critical need, as he brings experience and proven production to the table.

Over the course of his career, the 5 foot 10 redshirt senior has amassed 43 receptions for 548 yards and 3 touchdowns. His ability to make tough catches and move the chains has been a valuable asset for the Mountaineers, and his return will provide a much-needed boost to the passing game.

Fox’s impact extends beyond just his offensive contributions. He also has a proven track record as both a punt and kick returner. In his career, Fox has returned 37 punts for 301 yards and 29 kickoffs for 476 yards. Even more importantly, he can be relied on to field the ball cleanly in tough situations.

In a sport where leadership and chemistry can make a major difference, the addition of a veteran like Preston Fox could prove to be a crucial factor in the Mountaineers’ quest for a successful season.
