Many Fans Facing Reality About the Possible Future for WVU Athletics

By: Justin Walker | WV Sports Chat

Following WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker’s highly anticipated Spring update, Mountaineer faithful has had plenty to chew on. From facility upgrades and strategic financial planning to navigating the treacherous, ever-changing waters of NIL, Baker has given the fanbase a clear look at how WVU is positioning itself for the future.

But where exactly does that leave fan confidence?

We recently polled a small sample of the community to gauge how Mountaineer Nation is feeling about the long-term trajectory of WVU athletics. With 310 votes locked in, the results paint a fascinating picture of a fanbase that is cautiously optimistic, highly realistic, and fiercely protective of West Virginia’s place at the top table.

Here is how the numbers broke down:

The Poll Results: What is the Direction of WVU Athletics?

The Big Takeaways: Realism Reigns Supreme

1. The Power 2 Pragmatists (42%)

The clear winner of the poll shows that the majority of Mountaineer fans are keeping their feet firmly on the ground. At 42%, the largest contingent acknowledges that Wren Baker and the athletic department are doing a fantastic job making internal improvements. Yet, they remain skeptical about West Virginia breaking into an exclusive SEC/Big Ten “Power 2” breakaway super-league. This group isn’t pessimistic about WVU’s quality; rather, they are realistic about the forces and preferences driving decisions related to conference realignment.

2. The P2 Optimists (35%)

On the flip side, over a third of the fanbase is ready to run through a brick wall. According to the poll, 35% of voters believe the future is bright. They believe WVU’s brand, passionate fanbase, and strategic leadership will ultimately force the hand of the Power 2. For this group, Baker’s steady hand at the wheel is exactly what will elevate the Mountaineers into the elite tier when the next inevitable wave of realignment crashes down.

3. Holding the Line (16% & 7%)

Interestingly, only 16% of fans believe things will simply remain “status quo,” proving that most people recognize college sports is in an “adapt or die” era. Meanwhile, a tiny 7% minority fears the absolute worst—relegation to a Group of Six conference. The low number here is a testament to the job Wren Baker has done. Very few fans genuinely believe the sky is falling or that WVU is in danger of being left completely out in the cold.

Bottom Line

If this poll tells us anything, it’s that WVU fans respect the hustle. The overwhelming majority (77% combined between the top two tiers) agree that the athletic department is either visibly improving or primed for a massive leap forward.

Wren Baker’s Spring update clearly reinforced that West Virginia isn’t going to sit back and be a victim of the shifting college football landscape. Whether that aggressive strategy lands WVU sports a golden ticket to a P2 future or cements them as a top-tier anchor of a reconfigured Big 12, the fanbase is largely trusting the process.
