HAGERSTOWN, Md. – No. 15 West Virginia used a strong bullpen performance and timely early offense to down Penn State 3–1 on Wednesday night at Meritus Park.

Paul Schoenfeld had two hits, including a home run for the Mountaineers (25-8). Brock Wills finished with two hits and Gavin Kelly and Sean Smith each knocked in a run.

David Hagen got the start for WVU and pitched three innings, allowing a run and the bullpen shut down the Nittany Lions (10-24) the rest of the game. Ian Korn went two innings and Weston Smith tossed a scoreless frame. Reese Bassinger threw three innings of shutout baseball, earning his second save of the season.

Schoenfeld blasted a solo home run in the first to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage but Penn State responded in the second when Jack Porter homered to left field.

In the third, WVU regained the lead. Wills tripled and scored on Kelly’s sacrifice fly. Schoenfeld later doubled and scored on Smith’s infield single, extending the lead to 3-1.

The score held there as the bullpen shut down the Nittany Lions the rest of the way as Bassinger retired the side in the final three innings.

The Mountaineers will be back home at Kendrick Family Ballpark against Houston for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
