HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –West Virginia’s pitching staff dominated Marshall in a 3-0 win on Tuesday evening at Jack Cook Field.
Four Mountaineer pitchers combined to contain the Thundering Herd, allowing just one hit while striking out 11. Sophomore David Hagen set the tone early with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts before Ian Korn followed with three shutout frames of his own. He matched Hagen with three strikeouts. Reese Bassinger was sharp in relief, striking out five across two innings, giving up the lone Marshall hit but preserving the shutout. Freshman David Perez shut the door in the ninth to secure his fifth save of the season.
WVU (17-4) scored a run in each of the first three innings. Brock Wills brought home the first with an RBI groundout in the opening frame, while Gavin Kelly and Brodie Kresser followed with RBI singles in the second and third.
Matthew Graveline and Paul Schoenfeld each had two hits, while Schoenfeld, Matt Ineich, and Zahir Barjam all scored runs.
Marshall (13-10) threatened late, bringing the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and eighth innings, but Korn and Bassinger shut down both rallies with timely strikeouts.
The one-hit effort marks the Mountaineers’ first since holding UNC Greensboro to a single hit in 2023.
WVU heads west for a three-game series at No. 22 Arizona State. First pitch is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
