It is safe to say that Dawson Montesa has made quite the impression in his first three starts with West Virginia and has transitioned well from DII to DI competition.

The transfer junior had his best outing all season for West Virginia on Friday night where he worked seven strong innings allowing just one run on four hits. He followed that up with only allowing one walk while striking out 11 in the process.

Montesa also produced 25 whiffs against Kennesaw State.

16 whiffs came from his fastball that touched 96 mph, while four came from his cutter and splitter and one from his curveball.

This comes a week after only working four innings against Liberty where he was tabbed the loss.

Against the Flames, Montesa only lasted four innings and allowed three runs on two hits. However, even with just working four innings he managed to record eight strikeouts.

In his debut with West Virginia against Georgia Southern the lengthy righty worked six innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven batters.

This season he has accumulated a total of 17 innings pitched with 26 strikeouts with just four walks allowed and just six runs earned over 12 hits.

Montesa, before even throwing a single pitch against DI competition was ranked as the best player in the state of West Virginia.

Montesa’s best performance of his collegiate career came last season with Adelphi where he recorded 17 strikeouts over eight innings of work.

Montesa may start in one of the two games against Radford in the midweek, but it’s more likely that he makes his routine outing appearance against Columbia on March 6.
