On his weekly radio show on Monday night, West Virginia head football coach Rich Rodriguez gave an update on quarterback Nicco Marchiol.
Last week Marchiol did not play for the Mountaineers due to suffering a foot injury. He was out in Colorado getting evaluated then, per Rodriguez.
This week, as the team prepares for its game against BYU on Friday night, they’ll once again be without Marchiol.
Rodriguez said on Monday that Marchiol is once against being evaluated for his foot injury. This time he believes he is in Arizona.
“He called me yesterday. He’s out in Arizona, I believe. He’s seeing some doctors out there, and he told me that the one or two doctors that he talked to said that he had a foot problem and that he’s going to be out for several weeks. What I told him is we’ve got great doctors and trainers, so I want our doctors and trainers to communicate with his doctors so they get on the same page and know exactly what it is. He’s definitely out in the short-term, and then once their doctors talk to our doctors and trainers, we can figure out how long it’s going to be, I guess.”
The key factor here is this: if Marchiol does intend to seek a medical redshirt season, he will need to do so very quickly. Marchiol is right at the four-game mark, which means if he plays in another game this season, he won’t be eligible for a medical redshirt as Schuyler Callihan notes for SI WVU.
Rodriguez also was very blunt with the transfer questions as well.
“I told our players, if you’re not all in, you need to leave. And if I sense anybody not completely in — staff, player-wise, whatever — then you won’t be in. They understand that, so if they’re not in, they’re going to have to fake it real good. I don’t wake up every day trying to find somebody that ain’t in. I just want to make sure we’re all rowing the boat in the same direction, pulling the rope the same direction, and we will be.”
This then raised questions about is he taking shots at Marchiol — to which I don’t think he is — however, he’s making it very clear he wants guys who want to be here (at WVU) all-in. He doesn’t want the wishy-washy mess that other programs deal with on a daily basis day in and day out.
