Grant Hussey Powers WVU Past Utah

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Grant Hussey hit a two-run home run to lift West Virginia past Utah 6-3 on aa rainy Friday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Logan Sauve, Jace Rinehart, Kyle West and Hussey all had home runs in the Mountaineers (25-4, 5-3 Big 12) win.

Griffin Kirn responded to a disappointing last outing with a spectacular performance. The lefty pitched 6.2 innings and gave up three runs on 6 hits while striking out 14.

Chase Meyer earned the win for WVU, pitching 2.1 innings and surrendering just one hit.

Colter McAnelly suffered the loss for the Utes (13-14, 2-8). He pitched 7.1 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.

Utah took a 1-0 lead when Drake Digiorno homered to left field in the second.

In the bottom of the third, both Rinehart and West hit solo home runs to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead. Then Sauve made it 3-1 with a solo shot to center field.

The Utes tied the game in seventh after Austen Roellig’s base hit plated two.

Then Hussey blasted a long ball to right center to give WVU a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Spencer Barnett scored on a throwing error to put the Mountaineers in front 6-3 and setting the stage for Meyer to close the game out.

Hussey’s home run was career No. 41 for the senior.

WVU and Utah will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
