MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Miles Sadler scored 15 points as West Virginia pummeled Wheeling 98-55 on Wednesday at the Hope Coliseum.
Finley Bizjack scored 14 points for the Mountaineers. Mouhamed Sylla, Joson Sanon and Keonte Greybear each had 11 points.
WVU scored at least 80 points in each of its three exhibition games, scoring 90 or higher in the last two. The Mountaineers averaged 70.6 points per game last season.
“What’s unique about the early part of seasons is different styles of play that you play against, and this was really the first time we had played against more of a five-out kind of team,” WVU head coach Ross Hodge said. “They really challenged us in ways that we haven’t been challenged, and you get spread out and we didn’t guard the ball as well as we needed to.”
The Mountaineers had a 43-21 advantage on the boards.
WVU went more than eight minutes without a field goal in the first half.
After the half, the Mountaineers turned up the heat and outscored the Cardinals 53-27 while shooting 72 percent from the floor.
Brenen Lorient slammed a dunk off a lob from Sadler to open the second half. WVU continued its scoring and Sadler hit a 3 with 12:21 left to push the lead to 62-37 and start a 10-0 run.
Levon Jacobs led Wheeling with 13 points.
Kwynsie Pittsnogle, the son of former Mountaineer star Kevin Pittsnogle, who was in attendance for tonight’s game, sank a pair of 3-pointers for the Cardinals.
WVU will open the regular season against Niagara at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 at home.
