WVU Blanks Troy to Stay Alive in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Facing elimination, West Virginia delivered its most complete performance of the College World Series, routing Troy 12-0 behind four RBIs from Gavin Kelly and 5 1/3 scoreless innings from Dawson Montesa on Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field

Kelly had three hits for the Mountaineers (47-16), while Armani Guzman, Matt Ineich and Matthew Graveline each added two hits.

Dawson Montesa (6-5) picked up the win, pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings while giving up two hits and striking out six. Cooper Ellingworth (2-5) suffered the loss for the Trojans (39-32).

In the third, WVU jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Kelly led off the inning with a base hit and scored on a double by Graveline. Ineich walked and Brodie Kresser was hit by a pitch before Graveline scored on a wild pitch.

Kelly pushed the Mountaineers’ lead to 5-0 in the sixth with a three-run blast to left-center. Paul Schoenfeld followed with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Sean Smith’s RBI single extended the lead to 6-0.

Montesa ran into trouble in the bottom of the frame, walking a batter and hitting Steven Meier with a pitch but Ben McDougal came on and got the final two outs.

Ben Lumsden knocked in a run in the seventh and WVU tacked on five additional runs in the ninth to take a 12-0 lead.

The Mountaineers ended Troy’s season in the elimination game, setting up the rematch against North Carolina on Wednesday at 2 p.m. (ET).
