The No. 15 seeded Kansas Jayhawks and the No. 16 seeded West Virginia Mountaineers both had to take out the mighty SEC to advance to the Super Regionals.
And oddly enough, WVU’s paired Super Regional in UCLA, lost in the Regional and was eliminated by Saint Mary’s and will not host Cal Poly.
For Kansas, they awaited the winner of Georgia Tech and Oklahoma and when Tech had a 7-3 lead it almost looked like KU would be on the road, but a walk-off home run from the Sooners allowed the Jayhawks to play at least two more games in Lawrence against the Sooners.
Both teams were not favored to make it out of their Regional and surely neither team was favored to host a Super Regional but, welcome to college baseball as it was a chaotic weekend.
Troy took down Florida and won the Gainesville Regional while Little Rock won the Hattiesburg Regional. USC won the College Station Regional and Ole Miss won the Lincoln Regional. Another big upset over the weekend was St. John’s taking to Florida State to win the Tallahassee Regional.
With that, the Super Regionals are set and here is how they play out.
- West Virginia vs. Cal Poly
- Troy vs Little Rock
- North Carolina vs. USC
- Auburn vs. Ole Miss
- Kansas vs. Oklahoma
- Alabama vs. St. John’s
- Texas vs. Oregon
- Georgia vs. Mississippi State
The Super Regional times and dates will be announced by 10 am on June 2 with the expected timeframe to be around June 5-7 or June 6-8.
The Super Regional is a best-of-three game series. Meaning, all teams need to do is win two games and they will be in the College World Series.
If West Virginia defeats Cal Poly, according to the bracket on NCAA.com, they will matchup with the winner of Little Rock and Troy.
