MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a strong offensive performance, No. 18 West Virginia powered past Kansas State 13–6 on Sunday to complete a series sweep at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Paul Schoenfeld led the Mountaineers (31-12, 16-8 Big 12) with three hits. Matt Ineich added two hits, two RBIs, and scored three runs.
Dawson Montesa started and went four innings, allowing one run on two hits. Carson Estridge (4-0) picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings and giving up two runs on two hits. Joshua Surigao and Reese Bassinger also pitched.
James Guyette (5-2) suffered the loss for the Wildcats (26-22, 9-15), giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in four innings.
WVU took an early 1-0 lead on a failed pickoff attempt when Schoenfeld scored on Guyette’s error.
With the bases loaded in the third, Montesa walked in a run to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom half, Schoenfeld’s double pushed the Mountaineers back in front, 2-1.
In the fourth, WVU scored five runs to take a 7-1 advantage.
In the eighth, Kansas State cut the deficit to 7-4 on Shea McGahan’s three-run home run. However, WVU responded in the bottom half. On a double steal attempt, McGahan’s throwing error plated Guzman. Brock Wills followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Kresser from third. The Mountaineers then hit home runs from Tyrus Hall, Gavin Kelly, and Sean Smith to extend the lead to 13-4.
The Wildcats tacked on two runs in the ninth but it was not enough to salvage the finale.
The Mountaineers travel to Charleston on Tuesday to face in-state foe Marshall.
