No. 18 WVU Blanks Kansas State Behind Yehl’s Strong Return

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Maxx Yehl set the tone as No. 18 West Virginia returned to the win column with a 7-0 victory over Kansas State on Friday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Paul Schoenfeld finished with three hits and an RBI for the Mountaineers (29-12, 14-8 Big 12). Brodie Kresser and Brock Wills had two hits apiece.

After missing last week’s start, Yehl (6-1) returned to the mound and delivered five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. Tazwell Butler (0-3) took the loss for the Wildcats
(26-20, 9-13), surrendering three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

WVU struck first when Schoenfeld doubled to left-center, scoring Gavin Kelly to give WVU a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, the Mountaineers added to their lead on Sean Smith’s sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Inech. Two innings later, Matthew Graveline’s sacrifice fly scored Inech and gave WVU a 3-0 lead.

Ian Korn replaced Yehl in the sixth and retired the first six batters he faced. In the seventh, the Mountaineers loaded the bases with two outs after a single by Schoenfeld, a walk to Smith, and a hit-by-pitch to Armani Guzman. Kresser delivered a two-run single, a double steal brought home another run, and Wills added an RBI single to cap the scoring. Korn closed out the game to secure the win.

The two teams return to action on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. (ET).
