CINCINNATI, Ohio – Missed opportunities and costly wild pitches proved the difference as No. 12 West Virginia fell 5-2 to Cincinnati in game two on Saturday at UC Baseball Stadium.
Chansen Cole got the start after finishing game one and allowed two runs in three innings. Armani Guzman led the Mountaineers (28-11, 13-7 Big 12) with two hits.
The Bearcats (28-17, 9-11) opened the scoring in the first inning when Jackson hit his fifth home run of the season.
Cincinnati added another run on a wild pitch in the third, but in the fourth Sean Smith had an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bearcats took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on wild pitches before adding an unearned run in the sixth.
WVU threatened to complete the comeback in the ninth, loading the bases, but back-to-back strikeouts from Brodie Kresser and Brock Wills ended the rally.
The two teams will meet in the rubber match on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
