MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sydney Shaw recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as West Virginia thumped Temple 89–61 on Tuesday night at the Hope Coliseum.
Gia Cooke also notched 16 points for the Mountaineers (3–0), while Riley Makalusky added 12. Jordan Thomas chipped in 10 points, and Jordan Harrison contributed nine points along with seven assists.
Kaylah Turner led the Owls (2–1) with a season-high 23 points, while Savannah Curry and Tristen Taylor each added 11.
Turner’s 3-pointer gave Temple an early 5–2 lead in the first quarter before the Owls went scoreless for more than two minutes. Kierra Wheeler pulled WVU within one, and Harrison’s three-pointer put the Mountaineers ahead 7–5.
To close out the opening quarter, Temple made just one of its final seven shots from the field as WVU went on an 8–0 run—capped by a Shaw trey—to take a 19–11 lead.
In the second quarter, WVU seized control of the game. Cooke sparked the run with a defensive steal and an uncontested layup in transition. The Mountaineers then capitalized at the free-throw line, sinking seven straight points over a three-minute stretch. Thomas and Sydney Woodley each added buckets in the final minute to push WVU’s lead to 40–28 at halftime.
After the break, the Mountaineers continued their dominance, scoring 25 and 24 points in the third and fourth quarters. WVU led by as many as 32 in the final period.
The Mountaineers capitalized on Temple’s mistakes, scoring 24 points off turnovers and getting a season-high 34 points from the bench.
Harrison also recorded her 500th career assist in the victory.
With the win, WVU extended its home winning streak to 20 games.
The Mountaineers hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, Nov. 14, for the Greenbrier Classic, where they’ll face No. 15 Duke in a neutral-site matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
