WVU Shuts Out Marshall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–The West Virginia University baseball team defeated in-state rival Marshall 7-0 on Tuesday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

The Mountaineers (20-3) scored seven runs on eight hits. The Thundering Herd (12-13) had just four hits.

Chase Swain had two hits, including a home run, while driving in two runs and scoring two runs. Skylar King drove in two runs. Armani Guzman had two hits and an RBI.
 
Freshman pitcher David Hagen tossed four scoreless innings, surrendering one hit and striking out one. Tyler Hutson earned the win after tossing two scoreless frames.
 
WVU took a 1-0 lead in the first on King’s sacrifice fly. Then Swain hit a solo shot to make it 2-0 in the second inning.

In the third inning, the Mountaineers scored four runs King, Swain, and Guzman all had RBI singles. Jace Rinehart scored on a first-and-third double steal with King.
 
WVU tacked on an extra run in the eighth.
 
The Mountaineer pitching staff lowered its ERA to 3.14 this season and is now allowing just 6.63 hits per nine innings, both of which were already top 10 in the nation entering the game.
 
WVU will travel to BYU beginning for a three-game series with the Cougars beginning on Thursday, March 27. First pitch is set for 8:30 p.m. ET
