The West Virginia Mountaineers took down the Troy Trojans in a battle-tested opening round of the College World Series on Friday evening by the score of 7-5.

The catalyst for the offensive explosion was Tyrus Hall who had pair of hits and drove in four RBI for the Mountaineers but the deciding factor came in the bottom of the eighth frame when he drove in two more runs to help lead WVU to victory.

The Mountaineers will now play North Carolina on Sunday at 7 pm who defeated Ole Miss 6-2 on Friday night. Ole Miss and Troy will play in an elimination game at 2 pm on Sunday.

For Armani Guzman though, he broke the all-time single-season record for stolen bases by a Mountaineer’ when in the bottom of the first inning he stole home to give WVU the 1-0 lead.

Guzman steals home, his all-time Mountaineer’ best 39th robbery

It was Guzman’s 39th stolen base of the year which broke the single-season record by any Mountaineer base runner.

Guzman’s speed along with his ability to read balls in the infield and outfield has skyrocketed his ability to steal bags most players can’t and that most players wouldn’t even think to do namely stealing home plate in the College World Series.
