The West Virginia Mountaineers are headed to the Super Regionals for a third consecutive season, the second consecutive season under Steve Sabins. Prior to that, West Virginia made it to the Supers under Randy Mazey in 2024.
Now, for the second straight year, the Mountaineers got to experience another walk-off by Armani Guzman against the Kentucky Wildcats.
Last year in the Clemson Regional, Guzman walked off Kentucky to send WVU to the Super Regionals against LSU. The Mountaineerseventually fell short to the soon-to-be National Champion Tigers.
This year, in the bottom of the 10th inning with the game tied at 5, Guzman sent a sinking line drive to center field that bounced in front of the UK defender as he was diving for the ball. That hit sent WVU to the Super Regionals.
“Ever since I got here, I’ve always wanted to be the man,” Guzman said postgame. “I’ve always wanted to be the guy.”
The Mountaineers will welcome in Cal Poly for its first ever home Super Regional in program history. The Mustangs escaped the Los Angeles Regional without having to face the top-seeded UCLA Bruins who lost to Saint Mary’s twice.
WVU and Cal Poly will begin play on Friday, June 5 at 12 pm Eastern on ESPN2. Game two will be on Saturday, June 6 at 12 pm Eastern on ESPN. If a deciding game three is needed, they will play on Sunday with a time to be later announced Saturday evening.
