MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a dominant pitching performance from Ian Korn and Carson Estridge, No. 9 West Virginia defeated TCU 2-0 on Thursday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Korn (5-0) pitched six scoreless innings, giving up six hits while striking out six for the Mountaineers (36-12, 20-8 Big 12). Estridge came on in the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and earning his second save of the season.
Tommy LaPour (1-2) suffered the loss for the Horned Frogs (32-19, 16-12). He pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on three hits.
WVU scored both of its runs in the second inning to take an early lead. Matthew Graveline doubled down the left-field line to score Sean Smith. Armani Guzman’s sacrifice bunt moved Graveline to third before Brodie Kresser brought him home with a sacrifice fly.
TCU threatened with two runners on in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Korn escaped each time, including getting back-to-back strikeouts in the sixth.
Estridge gave up a single to his first batter in the seventh but retired nine straight to seal the win.
Game two of the series is on Friday night. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
