LAWRENCE, Kan. – Maxx Yehl’s dominant complete game performance led No. 15 West Virginia to a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Kansas on Friday at Hoglund Ballpark.
Yehl (7-1) struck out nine batters and gave up just one run on six hits for the Mountaineers (33-12, 17-8 Big 12). Dominic Voegele (5-3) took the loss for the Jayhawks (34-13, 20-5) after allowing three runs on six hits in six innings.
Armani Guzman had three hits while Gavin Kelly finished with two hits and one RBI.
Kelly blasted a solo home run to deep center field in the third inning to give WVU a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers added two more runs in the fourth when Guzman singled home Sean Smith. Guzman later stole home during a double steal to extend the lead to 3-0.
Kansas pulled within 3-1 in the sixth on Brady Ballinger’s sacrifice fly.
Tyrus Hall pushed the lead back to three with a solo home run in the seventh.
The two teams return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET when Chansen Cole takes the mound against Mason Cook.
