CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gavin Kelly hit two home runs as No. 15 West Virginia defeated Marshall 7-2 at GoMart Ballpark on Tuesday.
Matt Ineich went 2-for-3 with his fourth home run of the season for the Mountaineers (32-12).
David Hagen (4-1) picked up the win by allowing just one run in 5.0 innings of work, striking out one and allowing three hits. Landen Doll (2-4) suffered the loss for the Thundering Herd (21-27).
Kelly’s first home run of the night gave WVU a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Matthew Graveline’s RBI single through the left side extended the lead to two.
In the second, Ineich blasted a solo shot to right before Kelly hit one over the left field wall, putting the Mountaineers up 4-0.
Marshall got on the board in the fourth, but WVU answered with two runs in the fifth. Zahir Barjam drove in a run on a groundout before Sean Smith added an RBI single to make it 6-1.
Ethan Murdoch homered in the seventh, cutting the deficit to five. Paul Schoenfeld capped the scoring for the night with a sacrifice fly in the eighth before JT Huether pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Mountaineers will travel to Lawrence to face No. 7 Kansas, which currently sits atop the Big 12 standings. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m. ET.
