MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 12th-ranked West Virginia baseball team suffered a 23-1 loss to Pitt on Tuesday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
The Mountaineers (27-10) finished the night with just two hits. Matt Ineich and Matthew Graveline each had a hit.
WVU’s only run came off a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
The Panthers (25-14) took a 1-0 lead in the first on Lorenzo Carrier’s solo home run before erupting for seven runs in the second and eight in the third to break the game open. Pitt tacked on three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and added another in the sixth.
“When a game gets out of hand like that, you can’t be emotional because it’s very easy to be emotional,” Mountaineer head coach Steve Sabins said. “So, you have to set your team up for success on the weekend and in the future. And so, there’s actually probably more strategy in a game like that than people would imagine. The whole thing is basically built around getting people in the right spot.”
Gavin Kelly returned to the lineup for WVU after missing Sunday’s game.
The Mountaineers return to Big 12 play this weekend at Cincinnati. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday.
