MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a perfect 5-for-5 day from Paul Schoenfeld, No. 20 West Virginia rallied to beat BYU 12-10 on Friday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Gavin Kelly had three hits and drove in three runs while Brodie Kresser had two hits and three RBIs for the Mountaineers (13-4).

Ian Korn (1-0) earned the win with 4.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs and striking out a season-high seven, while David Perez picked up his fourth save.

Crew McChesney had two hits and four RBIs for the Cougars (10-11) and Ezra McNaughton had two hits and drove in three runs.

BYU took a 1-0 lead in the second, but WVU evened the score in the bottom of the frame. In the third inning, the Cougars jumped out to a 4-1 lead.

WVU responded and got back within one after an RBI double from Kelly and Schoenfeld’s RBI single.

In the fourth, BYU took an 8-3 lead. But the Mountaineers didn’t back down, putting up a four-spot in the fifth. Kresser opened the scoring with a base hit up the middle, plating Matthew Graveline and Schoenfeld. An error and a walk led to two more WVU runs. Kresser’s sacrifice fly tied the game 8-8 in the sixth.

Tyrus Hall opened the seventh with a single and Matt Ineich reached on a walk, setting the stage for Kelly who blasted a triple to right-center. Schoenfeld then drove in Kelly with his fifth hit of the game before coming around to score on a wild pitch.

BYU hit a two-run home run in the ninth before Perez came in and got three quick outs to seal it.

The Mountaineers will go for the sweep on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
