WVU baseball stars Gavin Kelly (catcher) and Dawson Montesa (pitcher) both received recognition from the Big 12 for their week three performances. Kelly was named the conference’s Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Montesa was named Co-Newcomer of the Week.
Below is an excerpt from the Big 12’s Press Release about the two WVU standouts:
West Virginia’s Gavin Kelly (player) and Dawson Montesa (co-newcomer), Oklahoma State’s Ethan Lund (pitcher) and Kansas State’s Grant Gallagher (co-newcomer) procured the Big 12 baseball weekly awards for the third week of the season.
Kelly powered the Mountaineers during a 3-1 week, hitting .579 (11-for-19) with two home runs, three doubles, six RBI and seven runs scored while posting a 1.053 slugging percentage. The sophomore catcher recorded multiple hits in all four games, including three-hit performances in each contest of West Virginia’s series at Kennesaw State. Kelly capped the weekend with his first career multi-home run game. He also added four walks to bring his on-base percentage to .652 and OPS to 1.705 on the week.
Montesa made his third start of the season at Kennesaw State, fanning 11 batters over 7.0 innings to earn the win. The junior right-hander allowed just one run on four hits and one walk. The 11 punchouts brought his season total to 26, ranking as the second-most in the Big 12 and No. 14 nationally.
Montesa shared the Co-Newcomer of the Week honor with Kansas State infielder Grant Gallagher.
