Legendary Former WVU Basketball Coach Bob Huggins Recognized at Akron Game

Akron, Ohio – Former WVU basketball coach Bob Huggins has been making his rounds lately. News popped up on social media that a documentary about the hall-of-fame coach’s life would be coming out sometime this year. He was also seen attending a Marshall game last week. On Friday, he was seen at an Akron men’s basketball game. During the game, the public address announcer recognized Huggins. The former Zips coach received a resounding ovation from the crowd. You can view a quick video of the scene below.

While more known for his success at West Virginia and Cincinnati, Huggins also served as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Akron from 1984 to 1989. During his five-season tenure, he compiled a 97-46 record, leading the Zips to four consecutive 20-win seasons and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1986. He departed for the University of Cincinnati following the 1989 season.

Schuyler Callihan with West Virginia on SI has argued that it’s time for West Virginia University to honor the former Mountaineer coach. However, there are no signs that day is coming anytime soon.

Huggins resigned as West Virginia basketball coach in June 2023 after being arrested for DUI in Pittsburgh. There was a lot of controversy surrounding his departure, so it’s possible that many inside WVU may not be ready to honor the Hall-of-Fame coach. Maybe, just maybe, time has yet to heal all wounds in Morgantown.
