Former West Virginia guard and current New York Knicks star Miles “Deuce” McBride threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the New York Mets on Friday night.
McBride, wearing a Mets jersey with the number 2, stepped onto the pitcher’s mound welcoming the Mets back to action after their break in action for the All-Star game.
How good was the pitch? The video shows McBride preparing for the pitch, winding up, and delivering the ball, which bounced before reaching the Mets player waiting to catch it. Despite the less-than-perfect throw, the moment was met with applause.
The moment symbolizes the relationship between McBride and the New York community. Earlier this week, McBride was on the Today show promoting his book and confessed that it was always a dream of his to teach kids the lessons that he learned through the game of basketball.
“I’ve always wanted to be a role model to the kids and really just inspire positivity, change, and anything they put their minds to, they can do it,” McBride said about the book on the Today Show. “I feel like sports just brings people together, and it’s just been such a fun process doing this.”
McBride is coming off his best season with the New York Knicks, where he averaged 9.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
