What we know is that Kyle West and Griffin Kirn have no eligibility remaining and will start their pro careers with their respective teams.
West was selected by the New York Yankees in the 13th round (404 overall) and Kirn was selected by the Athletics in the 14th round (410 overall).
Sam White, who was projected to be a high-end selection in the later rounds, did not get drafted. I’d assume he would return to WVU for another season and will likely be drafted next season.
Here’s where rest of the Mountaineers landed in the MLB Draft.
C Logan Sauve – Athletics – 7th round (200 overall)
P Robby Porco – Dodgers – 13th round (405 overall)
OF Skylar King – Red Sox – 15th round (448 overall)
P Owen Puk – Nationals – 18th round (531 overall)
I would assume Sauve would go pro. The slot pick for the Athletics is right around $310,000. However, there have been rumblings that Sauve may return to WVU next season to raise his stock higher than the 7th round.
As a lock for me, I’d expect Puk, who has signed with the Mountaineers, to stay committed to WVU and finish his collegiate career in Morgantown.
Porco and King are guys who are up in the air for me.
King told me earlier this summer that he was a Mountaineer for life and that nothing would ever take that away. He also mentioned he was going to see how things played out in the draft before he made a decision to go pro or return for one final season with WVU. If King returns to WVU his draft stock could skyrocket up into the earlier rounds from 8-10 round selections.
Porco, who has dealt with injury problems throughout his career with WVU is another intriguing option. He won’t jump through the rankings with the Dodgers farm system unless he tears it up in the minors. I would expect Porco to return for his final season in Morgantown. However, don’t be shocked if he does sign with the Dodgers.
Things will start to develop on what the roster looks like for WVU baseball in the next couple of days into the coming weeks.
There were no high school prospects for WVU that are committed to the team next season that were selected in the MLB Draft.
