CHARLESTON, W.Va.– A throwing error in the ninth allowed Marshall to score the game-winning run to beat in-state foe West Virginia 7-6 on Wednesday evening at GoMart Ballpark.

Kyle West had three hits for the Mountaineers (37-6), including a home run.

Chase Meyer (8-2) suffered the loss. He gave up one run on one hit.

The Herd (24-22) defeated their sixth ranked opponent on the season.

In the first inning, WVU took a 2-0 lead. Skylar King led off the inning with a base hit and scored on West’s double. West then scored on Marshall shortstop Maika Niu throwing error.

After a disappointing start over the weekend, Gavin Van Kempen took the mound looking for a different outcome. However, he issued a solo home run to AJ Harvilla in the bottom of the first.

The Mountaineers made it a 3-1 contest in the third when Sam White’s double through the left side scored Logan Sauve.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Herd took a 4-3 lead after a hit batsman, double, and Jackson Golden’s home run.

West tied the game in the fifth with a solo shot to left center.

WVU would retake a 6-4 lead in the sixth after Grant Hussey’s RBI single and a ground ball from Brodie Kresser scored Jace Rinehart.

Marshall scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to even the score. Golden’s base hit through the right side knocked in a pair of runs.

In the ninth, Meyer retired the first batter before walking the next. A single put runners at first and second. Then an easy ground ball to third baseman Chase Swain seemed like it would end the inning but a bad throw allowed the Herd to score.

The Mountaineers host Texas Tech for a three-game series this weekend in Morgantown.
