Mark Kellogg has been busy in the transfer portal, trying to get talent to Morgantown for this upcoming women’s basketball season. The Mountaineers are losing one of their best players in school history, JJ Quinerly, to the WNBA draft, so getting three new transfer portal commitments is a step in the right direction for Kellogg.
One commitment West Virginia got from the transfer portal was 6-foot-1 sophomore center Carter McCray from Wisconsin. She averaged 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds this past season for the Badgers. McCray was also the 2023-24 Horizon League Freshman of the Year when she played at Northern Kentucky.
Another commitment that Kellogg managed to get was 6-foot-2 guard Riley Makalusky from Butler. Makalusky averaged 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds last year with the Bulldogs.
An interesting twist also happened for West Virginia over the weekend. Former Norfolk State senior forward Kierra Wheeler flipped her commitment from Auburn to WVU. This was a surprise flip for Kellogg, as Wheeler’s former coach at Norfolk State, Larry Vickers, is now at Auburn, and people figured she would follow him. Wheeler averaged 17.5 points and 9.4 rebounds last season for the Spartans. She was also named the 2024 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
These three commitments for West Virginia will provide some talent upgrades for a team that lost in the Round of 32 against North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
