On Thursday, shortly after three-star defensive back Emory Snyder decided to commit to WVU football, the Mountaineers picked up a second defensive back for the 2026 recruiting class. Three-star safety Taj Powell pledged his commitment to the school, as announced on his social media account.

Powell is out of Springfield, Ohio, and announced his commitment after he visited WVU and watched a spring practice. Defensive Coordinator, Zac Alley, made him an offer in late January. He chose West Virginia over Kentucky, which is the only other Power Four offer he has received to date. The 6-foot-3 inch safety also received offers from Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Kent State, Miami (OH), Ohio, Temple, and Toledo.
Powell is scheduled to make his official visit the weekend of June 6-8. West Virginia is scheduled to play a road game against the Ohio Bobcats on Sept. 6, which is approximately 154 miles from Powell’s hometown.
Powell joins quarterback Jyron Hughley, running back Jett Walker, wide receiver Jeffar Jean-Noel, tight end Sam Hamilton, and defensive back Emory Snyder in the 2026 recruiting class for the Mountaineers.
