WVU Beats Utah, Sweeps Series

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Utah 14-4 in the second game of a doubleheader to complete the series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Spencer Barnett had four hits and knocked in two runs for the Mountaineers (27-4, 7-3 Big 12). Brodie Kresser finished with three hits. Skylar King, Jace Rinehart, Chase Swain and Grant Hussey each had two hits.

Jack Kartsonas (2-1) picked up the win for WVU. He tossed 3.1 innings, surrendering one run on three hits while striking out six.

Core Jackson led the Utes (13-16, 2-10) with three hits.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the second and Hussey tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Then Armani Guzman scored on a throwing error. King’s base hit to left field extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 5-1.

Jackson’s two-run home run to right field pulled the Utes within 5-2. However, WVU got a run back in the bottom half.

In the fourth, the Mountaineers broke the game up with a five-run inning.

Utah added a run in the fifth but WVU responded when Rinehart’s sacrifice fly scored Barnett.

After a rain delay, the Mountaineers picked up where they left off and Kresser’s infield single scored Barnett before adding two runs in the eighth.

WVU remains at home on Tuesday night as the Mountaineers take on Penn State. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. (ET).
