After the SEC decided to move to nine conference games, it led to WVU football’s two-game series with Alabama for 2026 and 2027 being canceled. What made it even more disappointing to some was the fact the game against the Tide was replaced with a game against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. Even the addition of a neutral site game against Virginia has not totally satisfied all Mountaineer fans. The 2026 schedule just does not seem to have the same luster as schedules of the past. After all, the Backyard Brawl was already going to be in year one of a three year hiatus and there’s no Penn State or Virginia Tech in non-conference play either.
Even with all of that, there is still a lot to be excited about when looking at West Virginia’s football schedule for this upcoming season. In the video above, I rank all 12 games the Mountaineers will play in 2026 based on excitement level. I also give an update on what Phil Steele thinks about the strength of WVU’s schedule.
