WVU and Troy release pitching matchup ahead of CWS on Friday

For the first time in program history the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Troy Trojans will be playing in the College World Series.

The two programs will face off with each other on Friday evening on ESPN.

With that, the Mountaineers elect to go with Chansen Cole on the rubber while the Trojans will trot out Benjamin Stubbs.

Cole and Yehl provide a 1-2 punch for the Mountaineers pitching staff but, Sabins and his staff will rely on Cole for game one and Yehl will likely go in game two against either Ole Miss or North Carolina in either the winners bracket or an elimination game.

Cole recorded 11 strikeouts against Cal Poly last weekend in an outing where he lasted seven complete innings allowing just two runs on eight hits. He also struck out 10 against Binghamton to open the postseason. So far this postseason he has 23 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work.

Stubbs this season is (6-3, 4.93 ERA) over 91.1 innings of work with 83 strikeouts and 37 walks on the year. He has allowed 96 hits with 54 runs allowed and has given up eight long balls this season.

In the postseason Stubbs has worked 12.1 innings with 11 strikeouts and two walks with six runs allowed on 13 hits.

WVU is averaging almost a base per at bat against southpaws this season and that number continues to grow in the postseason.

What a lot of people that don’t follow college baseball is that Charles Schwab Field is a pitchers park. If a home run leaves that park then it’s because the hitter got all of it. I’d suspect a lot of home run numbers we saw from the regionals/supers will die off some.
