WVU Falls to Kansas in Big 12 Title Game

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 2-seed West Virginia fell to top-seed Kansas 9-0 in the Big 12 Tournament final, Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.

The Mountaineers (39-14) finished with just six hits and were shut out for the third time this season. WVU threatened repeatedly early but failed to capitalize, leaving the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Ian Korn (5-1) took the loss despite allowing just two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. Toby Scheidt (5-1) picked up the win for the Jayhawks (42-16).

Kansas grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Tyson Owens’ solo home run, but Korn settled in and kept the Mountaineers in striking distance.

WVU threatened multiple times but could not capitalize.

In the sixth, Jordan Bach singled through the right side, extending the Jayhawks’ lead to 2-0.

Kansas broke the game open in the seventh, scoring six runs before adding another in the eighth.

Sean Smith, Maxx Yehl, and Armani Guzman were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Mountaineers.

WVU will learn its fate for NCAA Regionals on Monday, May 25, during the NCAA Baseball Selection Show at noon on ESPN2. The 16 regional hosts will be announced on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m.
