The No. 15 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers entered its weekend series four games behind Big 12 leader and No. 7 ranked Kansas Jayhawks. After taking the first two games of the series behind impressive pitching and clutch hitting from Gavin Kelly, the Mountaineers now are just two games behind in the Big 12.
On Sunday, WVU will send out Dawson Montesa who will make his third appearance on a Sunday.
Last Sunday against Kansas State, Montesa worked four innings allowing a run over two hits given up and managed to record six strikeouts with three walks as WVU claimed the 13-6 victory.
Montesa, who was the Friday starter for the majority of the season, now becomes the back-end rotational starter for Steve Sabins and company.
In those Friday starts, Montesa was 1-4 with a 7.71 ERA and had WVU battling for most of the game from behind which also had the bullpen being overloaded before Saturday and Sunday.
This series against Kansas, WVU has only used three pitchers. Two starts and a reliever.
Maxx Yehl pitched a complete game on Friday and Chansen Cole worked five innings before Ian Korn came in for relief and shit the door on for a win claiming the series on Saturday.
Montesa will need to bring one of his best outings on Sunday evening to help WVU sweep the Jayhawks.
