The West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team experienced a setback in the national rankings after a challenging 1-3 stretch. Despite maintaining a strong overall record, the recent results led to drops across major polls.
In the most recent rankings:
- No. 18 in the D1Baseball poll (down from No. 12)
- No. 20 in Baseball America (down fron No. 14)
- No. 17 in Perfect Game USA (down from No. 11)
The Mountaineers enter the new week with a solid 28-12 overall record and 13-8 in Big 12 Conference play. They boast a 9-2 mark in weekend series and a 2-1 record against Top 25 opponents this season, underscoring their competitiveness in a tough league.
The slide followed a difficult stretch that included:
- A lopsided 23-1 loss in seven innings to rival Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl.
- A series against Cincinnati where WVU earned a gritty 9-5 victory in 13 innings in the opener but dropped the next two games (6-2 and 7-5).
West Virginia will look to rebound immediately with a midweek non-conference game at Penn State on Wednesday in State College, Pa.
