Morgantown, WV – WVU head football coach Rich Rodriguez is still a believer in the Mountaineers. After a season that saw the Old Gold & Blue finish with a 4-8 record (2-7 Big 12), things have not soured for the 62-year old’s outlook on the future in Morgantown. Since arriving for his second stint in December 2024, Rodriguez has been adamant that a national championship is possible in Morgantown. Earlier today, he doubled down on that sentiment.
In his first press conference of WVU’s spring practice session, Rodriguez spoke about his aspirations for the Mountaineer Football program moving forward. For anyone that knows his competitive nature, his statement was no surprise.
Here is what Rodriguez had to say about the state of the WVU Football program:
“I said this a year ago – we’re going to work as hard as we can to bring a championship to West Virginia. You know, it was a tough start at times but I’m not backing down from that. I still think we can win the Big 12, which is a really good league. I think we can get in the College Football Playoff. I think you can win a national championship at West Virginia. It might be difficult, but this can be done.”
For the first time in what seems like forever, the WVU Football program finally has a head coach with title aspirations. Rodriguez is as passionate a Mountaineer as they come and will work tirelessly to bring the WVU fan base the long awaited championships that they desire.
It may not happen this season nor in 2027, but one thing is for sure – Rich Rodriguez will have the Mountaineers competing for accolades by the end of his coaching career.
