Morgantown, WV – Earlier today, WVU head football coach Rich Rodriguez spoke with the media to kick off spring practice for the Mountaineers. Rodriguez, now in year two of his second stint, took questions regarding the roster, NIL, and staff changes. The question on everyone’s mind, however, was the quarterback situation.
When asked about the addition of Oklahoma transfer Michael Hawkins, Rodriguez claimed he was brought in to “compete” with sophomore Scotty Fox and redshirt senior Max Brown for the starting quarterback job.
Here is what Rodriguez had to say about Hawkins:
“I knew about him from watching him a little bit. Obviously we have some guys that were at Oklahoma that saw him in person – who he was as an athlete, who he was as a person. We wanted someone to come in and compete with Scotty and Max for the job, and, you know, someone that we thought had the skill set that we thought could be special in it. Mike has that.”
Hawkins comes to WVU after making 9 appearances for the Sooners. During his time in Norman, the Texas native tallied 950 passing yards and 6 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. He also made an impact on the ground with 262 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
If Rodriguez’s track record says anything, fans can expect the quarterback competition to last well into fall camp.
