Phil Forte’s Rise Continues From Cowboy Star to WVU Assistant

Long before Phil Forte built a reputation as one of the most respected young assistants in college basketball, he built it as a player.

He played played at Oklahoma State from 2012-17 and was one of the Cowboys’ most decorated guards in program history, leading the team to to four NCAA tournament appearances. During his time in Stillwater, Forte made a record 329 3-point field goals and scored 1,792 career points.

Now, the former Oklahoma State standout is earning similar praise in the coaching ranks.

“He was the first person that I ever hired when I got the head coaching job at North Texas and I didn’t know Phil,” West Virginia head coach Ross Hodge said. “And you know, that’s funny. Typically, when you think you get these opportunities, you in the back of your mind, you just think probably you’re going to go with at least somebody you know right away for your first hire.”

Instead, Hodge trusted the reviews.

“But I had some other people that had worked with Phil and they raved about him,” he said. “And then obviously growing up in Texas where I’m from and he’s he’s a legend there, too.”

Forte’s playing career with the Cowboys made him a household name in the state of Texas and across the Big 12. Known for his shooting range and relentless work ethic, he finished his career as one of the program’s most prolific scorers.

According to Hodge, those same traits have translated seamlessly into coaching.

“Just his work ethic and his commitment and everything that made him a great player has followed him into the the coaching ranks and he’ll definitely be a head coach, sooner than later,” he said. “And he does a tremendous job and he’s so consistent and he’s again everything that made him a great player is what makes him a special coach.”

The Flower Mound, Texas native’s attention to detail and consistency have made him a steady presence on staff, particularly in player development and preparation. While his playing résumé carries weight, it’s his daily approach that has impressed those around him.

For a coach who took a chance on someone he didn’t previously know, the decision has paid off.

And if the trajectory continues, Forte’s time as an assistant may not last much longer.
