Chase Meyer to Start 2026 Out of Bullpen for WVU

When the news broke of Chase Meyer being set back a couple of weeks at the Mountaineers’ baseball press conference by head coach Steve Sabins earlier this week fans began to worry and wonder how this would impact his draft stock later this summer.

Meyer, who has been tabbed as a preseason All-American Big 12 pitcher is 3-4 weeks behind schedule per Sabins.

“Now he’s building up, but he’s probably, I hate to use the word behind, but just from a scheduling standpoint and a build-up standpoint, he’s probably three or four weeks behind the rest of the pitching staff,” Sabins said. “But he’s in a great spot.”

The truth is simple — Meyer is the clubs best returning pitcher, and truthfully, could be tabbed as the clubs best overall pitcher on the roster with Dawson Montesa, who will start this Sunday, right behind Meyer.

In 22 games last year with WVU, Meyer started in three of them. Meyer went 9-2 with a 3.94 ERA. Scouts have told WV Sports Chat that Meyer has the potential and ability to be a mid-to-late second-round draft selection this summer.

One scout told WV Sports Chat that if Meyer can seem to get his command under control in 2026 then he could surpass himself inside the top first three rounds of the MLB Draft next summer.

Another scout told WV Sports Chat that if Meyer produced numbers Ike he did in 2025 in 2026, then he could be selected “very early” in the MLB Draft. That same scout said they would not be surprised if Meyer started his professional career next summer.

Sabins also later confirmed to the media that Meyer will be starting the season out of the bullpen before transitioning to a starter role.

“He’ll be coming out of the bullpen early this season, just because he’s probably at a two-inning, maybe three-innings max, depending on how efficient he is early on here,” Sabins said. “But he’s capable of anything he wants to do if he competes well and throws strikes.”
