MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In the first availability report of the week leading up to WVU’s game against UCF, some new names have appeared. The initial report confirms what Rich Rodriguez said earlier this week about running back Tye Edwards and quarterback Jaylen Henderson. Both players are listed as “Out” for the game on Saturday.
Another player that Rodriguez mentioned, linebacker Ashton Woods, is also officially listed as “Out.” Rodriguez reported in his weekly press conference that the redshirt freshman would be out for the remainder of the season.
The two surprise names on the report are defensive lineman Hammond Russell IV and defensive back Fred Perry. They are listed as “Doubtful” and “Probable” respectively.
With Russell likely missing the game at UCF, sophomore Nate Gabriel may be asked to step in and play the nose tackle spot. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley may go a different route. Backup defensive tackles Devin Grant or Asani Redwood could be thrust into a starting role, with Edward Vesterinen or Eddie Kelly Jr. moving over to play the nose tackle position. Either way, losing a veteran like Russell would be a big loss for this Mountaineer defense.
Quarterback Nicco Marchiol also remains out for the season. See the full availability report below.
