MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In the high-octane world of college football, where quarterbacks are judged by their ability to make split-second decisions under pressure, West Virginia University’s Nicco Marchiol has emerged as a standout in the 2025 season opener.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez, back at the helm of the Mountaineers, has labeled Marchiol an “accurate” quarterback, a high compliment from a coach known for his demanding offensive system. Marchiol’s performance against Robert Morris showcased why he’s earned this praise and solidified his role as WVU’s starting quarterback.
“Nicco is an accurate thrower,” Rodriguez said during his weekly press conference. “Some of his throws in the last game we off run plays, RPO’s. He could’ve thrown more of them. In the second half we kind of shut a lot of those down, we were just going to hand the ball off. He’s really comfortable in the RPO world. He’s a very accurate guy.”
Marchiol, a redshirt junior, took the field against Robert Morris with the weight of a heated quarterback competition behind him. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the starting role throughout the preseason, Marchiol silenced doubters with a commanding performance.
Completing 17 of 20 passes, he racked up 224 passing yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception. His efficiency didn’t stop there—he also carried the ball 13 times for 56 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run that capped an 83-yard opening drive.
