In the latest WV Sports Chat “Fan POV”, this week we take a look at what West Virginia fans would call a successful and unsuccessful season for Rich Rodriguez at the helm of the Mountaineers’ in 2025.
Below are fan responses to that question on X (formerly Twitter).
Beat pitt, make a bowl game. I’ll take that for the first season.

A winning record for success. Below .500, unsuccessful.
— Heidi (@HeidiMorris68) August 13, 2025
7 or more wins would be successful
— Mountaineer Steve (@Mountaineer_Ste) August 12, 2025
5 or less wins would be unsuccessful
6 wins is a push
Make a bowl game and beat pitt.

Success would be a team that doesn’t make you want to beat your head against the wall with the same mistakes every single week. A team that looks likes they know what defense is would be nice as well. Those two changes alone could get us to a bowl game and that would be ideal.

Success- beat pitt, make bowl game and win, improvements to roster management, and visible culture change from previous staff.

Unsuccessful- the opposite.
I think it’s clear that the pitt game will be how we judge this season. Beating them will make even a bad season tolerable. Realistically, beat pitt and make a bowl game and most of us will be really excited for year two.

Successful- Bowl game

Unsuccessful- No bowl game
It's a fine line
7-5 or 8-4 with a bowl win would be considered successful. As far as unsuccessful, not making a bowl game at the very least wouldn’t make the fans happy.

As you can tell by the responses, it is obvious fans want WVU to make a bowl game, but the bigger picture for Rich Rodriguez, according to the fans, is beating Pitt.
In my game-by-game prediction back on July 4, I predicted that WVU would defeat Pitt, 20-17.
