The West Virginia football team has been grappling with a series of setbacks that have left their once-promising running back room in disarray as the 2025 season approaches. Injuries and unexpected eligibility issues have thinned the roster, forcing head coach Rich Rodriguez to scramble for solutions.
However, a glimmer of hope emerged with the return of junior college transfer Cyncir Bowers to practice, offering a potential lifeline for the beleaguered unit.
His arrival is seen as a potential boost, given his impressive junior college stats, which include 13 kickoff returns for 344 yards, including a 100-yard touchdown return, and seven punt returns for 148 yards at an average of 21.1 yards per return. He also rushed for 1,008 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Though Bowers has been missing in action early in camp, Rodriguez knows what he can bring to the table when healthy.
“He’s an athletic guy,” Rodriguez said, describing Bowers. “I should look up what the speed was, the 40 times or whatever, but he’s one of the faster guys we’ve got. Good football player, very contentious.”
