Opening Statement
“The second day in shells. I thought there were some parts of it better than yesterday, some not as much. I’m trying to get this is more of a staff issue. I’m trying to get everybody more engaged with the down and distance and awareness of the situation when were out there. Sometimes as coaches when you’re on the sidelines you just kind of let me run everything. I don’t want to run everything. So, we’ll get that fixed. But we made some steps. They’ll get a little break tomorrow. I think they’ll get some individuals tomorrow and a chance to rest their legs a little bit and then big week next week.”
On what the staff does on Sunday’s and working through what the coaches have seen
“The most important part of our day is when we’re with our players. That’s anytime, all year around. Everything else stops. On Sundays when players don’t have to be here much during camp that’s when we actually get some time to get a little more evaluation in and discuss personnel.”
What are non-negotiables when evaluating QB’s being game ready
“They’re going to make mistakes. Is it a physical mistake and if it’s a mental mistake is it an egregious mistake like we’ve overemphasized not to do. Obviously, taking care of the ball, everybody will tell you that. What you can’t have is the repeated mistake.”
On why his offense takes longer to install than other coaches
“I think we’re slower to put more in. A lot of people put it in three days, and they’ve gotten ten different runs in the first day or something. We’re slow to add. It has to be relatable.”
If practice is slowing down for the players
“The tempo is non-negotiable, so they have to learn it fast. They’re still learning the formation signal first. In my experience once they get it fast and you know they got it down you can move on to the next thing.”
Is pass read or run read tougher for his QB’s or are they equal?
“I think in this day and age the pass reads are a bit more difficult because you see more exotic coverages.”
If it’s easier for Pat (White) and Rhett (Rodriguez) to teach the QB’s since they know the system
“I would hope so. There’s no question. They both played in it. Not that you’d have to have played in it to be able to teach it.”
On if the team has gotten faster since the spring
“I think we did with some personnel moves, and I think our strength staff did a good job. I don’t look out there and think gosh we’re really slow at that position. So, I always like to be faster at all of our skill positions on offense. So, I think our team speed has been pretty good.”
