Wetherholt Impresses in Triple-A Debut

It didn’t take former Mountaineer JJ Wetherholt long to make his name known to the Memphis crowd on Wednesday night.

The former WVU stand out, and top Cardinals draft pick last summer, has skyrocketed through the Cardinals organization so far just a year into his pro career.

Since making his pro debut at Single-A Palm Beach last season, Wetherholt has slashed .299/.419/.445 in 401 Minor League plate appearances.

In 62 games with Springfield, Wetherholt has hit seven home runs with another 34 runs driven in. He’s also produced an impressive .300 batting average to boot this season.

Wetherholt was also selected as a member of the NL Futures Game with 17 Top 100 prospects set to compete on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta.

He didn’t slow down on Wednesday.

In fact, he got hotter. Especially in game one of the doubleheader.

Wetherholt blasted a solo home run and hit a triple in his Triple-A Memphis Redbirds debut in the clubs 10-4 loss in game one of the doubleheader. He did not have the same success in the clubs second doubleheader.

Wetherholt between three levels in his minor league career has hit 10 home runs and driven in 55 runs along the way.

Wetherholt hit two home runs in Single-A, seven home runs in Double-A and now has added one more home run in Triple-A.
