WVU Football Adds Two More Defensive Backs from Transfer Portal

by: Brandon Walker

The West Virginia football program added two defensive players on Wednesday. The Mountaineers picked up commitments from UNLV linebacker John Lewis and Akron defensive back Darrian Lewis from the transfer portal.

Lewis was a four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class and played four seasons at Mississippi State, recording 365 snaps in 40 career games. He recorded 41 combined tackles in 2023 and 2024.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Mississippi native comes to WVU with one year of eligibility remaining.

Lewis committed to UNLV after hitting the transfer portal in December; however, he re-entered on April 21 before committing on Wednesday.

Darrian Lewis (5-foot-10, 190 pounds) started in each of his three seasons with the Zips. He recorded 202 tackles, 15 pass breakups, and two interceptions at Akron. He also has one year of eligibility remaining.

The Akron, Ohio native will join fellow Akron transfer Devonte Golden-Nelson in the revamped defensive back room at WVU.

Both players will provide valuable experience in positions of need for the Mountaineers as new defensive coordinator Zac Alley continues to install his system.
